The Bad Boys Don’t Come Around Anymore

This is a scene from Clifford the Big Red Dog. You probably remember the book, but not the scene.

Note the snarl on Clifford, the trembling fear of the boys, the rapturous delight in Emily’s face. This is the eerie conclusion to a  dark, untold, back story. Who are these bad boys, I wonder? Were they mean to Emily, or do they entice her to do bad things? And what happens next?

Though the book has been in print for nearly fifty years, and I’m not one to second guess a legend, I do think there could be one slight improvement to the scene.

  1. I myself was surprised, though perhaps I shouldn’t have been given the year of publication, that one of the bad boys was black. He’s the only minority in the whole book, too. It’s worth noting that The revised edition has two white boys.
