You Stupid Darkness!

Peanuts had some brilliant moments in its long life. This is one of them.

It’s one I remember when I am grousing about something outside my control. I can turn my mood around by saying “you stupid darkness!” out loud, then laughing at myself. This one and, in fact, the entire Peanuts series are online, for free, at http://comics.com/peanuts. It’s one of the most amazing but little-known Internet resources there is.

  1. I like to use Calvin & Hobbes quotes. One of my favorites is “Some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants won’t help.”

    • I love that one too of course. I think my all time favorite quote is “Maybe we can eventually make language a complete impediment to understanding,” with a close second being, “Let me see your bat a minute.”

  2. Peanuts, Calvin & Hobbes, The Far Side… my kids and I still mourn them! Kurtis, any recommendations for a current comic strip to follow to ease this ache in our hearts?

    • I don’t know… I like some web cartoons (Laugh Out Loud Cats, XKCD, the one with the otters) but I feel like the whole “comic strip” ship has sailed. But those are my three favorites, too.

      • I follow xkcd — and sometimes even understand it. I’ll check out the others, although if LOL Cats is the one I think it is (captioned photos of kitties) I might have to lie down in a darkened room with a cold compress on my forehead.

  3. I was in the library, casting about for inspiration, and came across SNOOPY’S GUIDE TO THE WRITING LIFE. It was a clever idea, compiling a mess of Peanuts strips that involved Snoopy at the typewriter, along with brief companion essays from, as I recall, different authors.

I enjoyed it for a while, grew bored, and put the book away. But there is a lot on the writing life in those old comics. Too bad he didn’t have a blog.
